What is Saint Patrick Day?
St. Patrick's Day is one of the most revered yet misunderstood holidays that we celebrate. So many people are distracted with the green beer and shots of Jameson to really take the time to understand the holiday that is St. Patrick's Day. The holiday experienced a very auspicious start. Saint Patrick Day also know as The Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious holiday that is traditionally celebrated on March 17th. Now Saint Patrick himself is known as the Patron Saint of Ireland recognized by the Catholic church. The holiday was made official in the early 17th century. That day, the lenten restrictions on eating and drinking are lifted which is how the eating and drinking in oblivion tradition started. March 17th commemorates the arrival of Christianity into Ireland and also celebrates Irish heritage and culture.
The holiday celebrations include festivals, parades, wearing green attire and of course drinking and eating delicious food. Did you know that the color associated with St. Patrick's Day was not always green? In fact the original color associated with the holiday was blue. The shamrock was introduced as an iconic part of the celebration and the green color was eventually adopted. Drinking beer all night is only part of the celebration. A great hat can make you look the part and inject some life into your holiday celebration. Don't get pinched for not wearing green this St. Patrick's Day.
